What Is The Latest In Advanced Periodontal Care?

New Ozone Therapy Options Are Being Tested

A number of Centers for Dental Medicine have begun training and using Ozone generators in the treatment of periodontal infection.   Several practices have reported initial evaluations of the devise on ease of use, low cost, and tissue response as excellent.  We are currently working on some clinical reviews  and case studies and this information will be available shortly.

In the meantime, a search of the web lists many articles on the efficacy of ozone therapy in the treatment of periodontal disease and other dental procedures.

From www.eHow.com, here is the latest:

Ozone is a molecule consisting of three atoms of oxygen. It is produced naturally by lightning and by various industrial processes. Ozone therapy is a controversial practice in alternative medicine and is considered harmful by mainstream medicinal practitioners. Ozone therapy equipment is banned by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. The following steps will show how to use ozone therapy in dentistry.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Rinse and gargle with ozonated water. This is used to treat oral abscesses, periodontal problems, sore throats and ulcerations. Ozonated water also may be used in a dentistoffice for irrigation.

  2. Step 2

Prevent tooth decay and maintain periodontal health with ozone. A custom tray is made that fits over the teeth and gums. Ozone gas is passed into the tray for a period of time and the treatment is repeated every few months.

  3. Step 3

Prevent a root canal or extraction with ozone. An exposed nerve is washed with ozonated water followed by ozone gas that often prevents the nerve from dying, thus making a root canal unnecessary.

  4. Step 4

Disinfect a tooth with ozone before performing a root canal or restoration. The tooth is composed of many tubules that may contain harmful bacteria. Ozonated water and gas can permeate these tubules and kill the bacteria.

  5. Step 5

Treat pain in the temporomandibular joint with ozone. Some practitioners inject ozone gas directly into the temporomandibular joint for the purpose of killing microorganisms. It also may reduce the inflammation and promote new cartilage growth.

The Nutrition Connection - Supporting the body's defense system
By Marcus Gitterle, MD

A famous doctor once told me that “Medicines, such as antibiotics don’t cure you; They just reduce the level of harmful bacteria to the point where your own immune system can take over”.

The immune system is the body's defense against infectious organisms and other invaders. Through a series of steps called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms and substances that invade our systems and cause disease. The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body. As we age, the body is less able to assimilate the nutrients required to maintain an optimal immune system and it is more necessary to make sure that our diet contains fruits and vegetables and that we take the right supplements. We have heard much about anti-oxidants that prevent cell oxidation and lower the occurrence of disease, aging and even cancer. They are important supporters of the immune system.

As we have noted, periodontal disease is much more common among 60 year olds than 20 year olds, even though 60 year olds are more dental savvy and probably brush better. The difference is likely in the body’s ability to fight off the attacks of bacteria and chemicals.

Recent research at Loma Linda University showed that a nutritional supplement alone (Pharmaden), without any other dental treatment, was able to significantly combat the effects of periodontal disease, lowering bleeding and pocket depths (19).

The key ingredients in the supplement were Grapeseed Extract, CoQ10 (Ubiquanone), Echinacea and Folic Acid. It is valuable to examine these elements because several are not normally found in your daily multi-vitamin.
